Nerita in Red

Red is a color difficult to paint in large areas when showing form. Within red there are nuances of yellow, pink and then blue within the shadows. Since I have started painting in oils it has been difficult to grasp starting with dark and going to light with the paint. I find myself pushing and pulling the color to get it right. My only conclusion is I need to paint more! Practice, practice, practice!

I would never know that this is difficult; I see so many shades of red that you made, Heather. Way back when I painted I remember blending and mixing color right on my canvas to get it right. Is the shell this red in real life? I don’t recall ever seeing such a red shell, it’s beautiful! Thanks for sharing! ❤

Thanks Cindy ! It’s really silly but I keep repeating to myself how important values and color are to myself while I paint. I am really enjoying some brighter colors lately, so I decided to bump up the intensity of the red. I used my artistic license 🙂

Another lovely painting. How interesting too about the color red – I never realized about the nuances within this color, probably something you would only notice when you start to paint with it.
